What Is Alternative Dispute Resolution?

Jacob Scholl is a recent law graduate from the University of Denver's Sturm College of Law with a passion for everything related to law, especially criminal defense, divorce law, and Marijuana law. In 2018, he became a member of American Mensa, an organization for people who score in the top two percent on an accepted, standardized intelligence test. Among his law-related activities, Jacob Scholl is participating as a speaker in a continuing legal education course for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

ADR refers to a range of dispute resolution techniques, such as arbitration, mediation, or negotiation, used to get disagreeing parties to reach an agreement and settle the dispute without litigation. Recently, ADR is being adopted more often to settle disputes since these procedures are usually less costly and more efficient.

While Alternative Dispute Resolution is less formal and removes the necessity of going to court, it usually still involves the hiring of attorneys for both the consultation on possible strategies and to serve as mediators or arbitrators. Often, both parties agree to hire a single lawyer that acts as an impartial third party and guides the resolution while ensuring the reached agreement is legal.
